One scam that had personally happened to me was involving someone faking my bank’s phone number and making it look like the number was legitimately from them. When my phone rang, the caller ID showed the exact same line as customer service from my bank. And I had been living in a small town, and knew my Bank’s phone number so I thought it was weird they had been trying to contact me. The person on the phone acted professional and claimed they needed to verify some activity on my account, which was kind of a regular thing so I didn’t think much of it. They were walking me though different “security steps” and asking for personal information to verify my account, or so I thought. It didn’t feel suspicious at first because everything matched what my real bank would say, but the scam became obvious when they asked me to read off a verification code that had been sent to my phone. That code would’ve given them full access to my account if I had not caught onto what was happening. I immediately hung up and called my bank to freeze my account just in case, and they informed me that that has been happening in our town and to be aware of giving personal information out. Someone could spot this by remembering that Bank’s never ask for verification codes, login credentials, or personal information over the phone.
I’m so glad your raising awareness to this to not give out your sensitive information
Thank you Parker!
I actually had a similar scam happen to me where someone pretended to be my bank. I didn’t know they could spoof phone numbers like that. Thanks for explaining how to spot the red flags.
I know it was crazy, I’m glad you learned something.
I’ve heard of this happening recently! It is so important to know what red flags to look for in these scam calls so you don’t lose any money or personal information!
I’m glad that awareness is being raised on this situation.
Considering my mom had something similar happen to her, having you share your story will definitely help us in the future when spotting scams.
I’m glad this can help you in the future, and that’s wild it happened to your mom as well! Hope it all worked out.
